I first saw this idea in a Pinterest post from The Tiptoe Fairy and knew I had to try my hand at it! Whether you’re hosting a Hocus Pocus themed Halloween party this fall or you’re just looking for a way to jazz up movie night, these Hocus Pocus spellbook brownies will be perfect!

Ingredients
betty crocker boxed milk chocolate brownie mix, a tube of black decorating gel icing, and a jar of candy eyes

These Hocus Pocus spellbook brownies could not be simpler to make! All you need is a boxed brownie mix (any kind will work) and the ingredients to make them (usually oil, eggs, and water) plus black decorating gel icing and candy eyeballs. I found this jar of candy eyes at Hobby Lobby, but I also saw candy eyes in the Wilton baking section of my local Meijer store! Especially at this time of year, I think these are pretty easy to find!

How To
  1. Mix up your brownie batter and pour into a greased 9×13 baking pan. Bake according to the directions on the box—I baked mine at 350 degrees for about 26 minutes.
  2. After the brownies are completely cool, cut them into longish skinny pieces so they look like books. I cut five rows and then down the middle the long way (see the video above).
  3. Decorate each brownie to look like the Hocus Pocus spellbook with black decorating gel and a candy eye. I used the back decorating gel to stick the candy eye about halfway down on the righthand side, then drew a circle around it. On the lefthand side, I drew a squiggly line from top to bottom and then a straight line down through the middle. Lastly, I decorated the corners on the right side with some curved lines. Easy!

Tip: The black decorating gel worked fine and is easy to find in the baking section of any grocery store, but it never really dries down all the way. This can make for a bit of a mess while eating the brownies later! If you’d like to avoid this problem, black cookie icing in a piping bag would work just as well.
