It’s that time of year, friends! Time to start thinking about Halloween costumes. Personally, I’ve already been thinking about Halloween costumes for weeks because we’ll be attending Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party in October, and I really wanted us to do a family costume this year! Our top two requirements for this year’s costumes were affordable and COOL. And we ended up with a bunch of ideas, so I thought I’d share some of them here! If you’re looking for some ideas for simple and affordable family halloween costumes—keep reading!

Many of these ideas definitely fall into the category of “bounds” more than costumes, but I think that’s what makes them fun and creative! And especially if you are attending Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, visiting the parks, or live somewhere it’s warm on Halloween, a bound rather than a full-on costume is the way to go to stay cool and comfy! Bounding is perfect for simple and affordable family Halloween costumes.

hocus pocus halloween costumes for allison, max, and binx with pictures of a white shirt, beige cardigan, gold necklace and black boots, a tie dye shirt, black long sleeve shirt, jeans, and white shoes and a cat ear headband with a black shirt and black pants.
Allison, Max, and Binx from Hocus Pocus

And if you had a fourth or fifth family member, you could easily add Dani and/or Billy Butcherson to this line up!

For Allison, all you need is light-wash jeans, a cream-colored sweater, and a beige cardigan. If you really want to pull the look together, add boots and a pendant necklace like Allison wears in the movie! Max could go a couple different ways. Jeans, a tie-dye shirt, and white Nikes would let everyone know who you are! Later in the movie, Max wears a navy sweatshirt and an olive drab jacket, which would also work great.

Have your little one dress as Binx in black pants (or shorts if it’ll be hot!), a black shirt, and a simple cat-ear headband. Then use black eyeliner to color the tip of their nose and draw on a few whiskers!

If you have someone in your group that wants to dress up as Dani a red top, black skirt, red tights, and a witch hat would work perfectly. And don’t forget the plastic jack-o-lantern trick-or-treat bucket!

The best part about this idea is all of these items can be worn again if you buy them new—or found affordably at a thrift store!

Hundred-Acre Wood Friends

I love this idea for bigger groups and for it’s thrift-store and back-of-the-closet potential. Pooh Bear? Yellow bottoms and a red top. Piglet? Horizontal pink stripes! Tigger? A simple tiger-striped shirt. This donkey headband and tail set is super affordable—combine it with a gray outfit for a simple Eeyore look. This idea has so many potential variations and would be so easy to put together. If you’re really looking for something last-minute, this could be your winner!

Captain Hook, Smee, and Tink from Peter Pan

This is another good one for a larger group because you could easily add more characters like Peter, Wendy, or even Tick-Tock Croc.

Pair a simple costume t-shirt like this one with black pants and boots for Hook. You can get a costume “hook” for your hand super cheap on Amazon to complete the look! Smee is another easy one—you just need a blue and white horizontal-striped shirt like this one, blue shorts (these are only $6.48 on Amazon), and brown sandals. A green dress like this one would be perfect for Tink and also comfy and cool! Put it with a cheap pair of fairy wings and some green shoes, and you’re all set!

Inside Out Emotions

We were so close to going with this one for our costumes this year! I think this would be so fun to put together and definitely has great thrift-store potential, making it great as far as simple and affordable family halloween costumes go.

Joy is easy with a yellow dress, yellow shoes, and maybe even a blue hat to mimic Joy’s blue hair. You might be able to pull together a Sadness look right from your own closet. All you need is dark wash jeans, a white or cream cable knit turtleneck, and blue flats (these ones are only $16.99 on Amazon!).

Fear would be a fun one for anyone in the family! Purple bottoms (gym shorts like these are a great option!), a black and white houndstooth vest (check out this one for only $9.99!), and a red bowtie pull this one together quickly and easily.

Disgust is an easy one with a flirty green dress, a fuchsia neck scarf, and matching flats. And, finally, put together an Anger look with brown pants, a white button down, and a red or brown patterned tie (find the one I used in the image above here on Amazon).

Overall I think this is a super fun and unique idea that could come together really easily and fit into any budget!

Marnie, Kal, and the Halloweentown Jack-o-Lantern

Let’s be honest, Disney Channel Original Movies just hit different in the 90s and early 2000s! These looks are from Halloweentown II, and they’re super easy to pull off with things you may already have in your closet. For Marnie, a burgundy dress and a purple cardigan mimic her witchy look. Add burgundy boots and gold star earrings if you have them! And a purple witch hat would really top off the look! Kal is as simple as can be as he just dresses in all black. Add a black leather blazer and you’re good to go. He could even carry a single red rose (remember in the movie when he gives Marnie a rose?).

This would make a great couple’s costume, but if you have a little one in your group, I think it would be so cute for them to dress up as the iconic Halloweentown jack-o-lantern! You could go all out with a full pumpkin costume like this one, or (if your kid is anything like mine) keep it cool and simple with a jack-o-lantern t-shirt like this one. Add a pair of black (or green) joggers and some cute green converse, and your kid will stay comfy all night long!

The Sensational Six

And, finally, what we ended up choosing for our costumes this year! Since there are only three of us, we decided to do Mickey, Minnie, and Donald, but you could add whoever you like (Daisy, Goofy, and Pluto would all be good options)!

As Minnie, I’ll be wearing this red and white polka dot dress that I got from Amazon. Plus yellow converse sneakers and a classic Minnie ear headband with a red bow.

For my son, who will be dressing as Donald, we lucked out because he already has a Donald Duck hat similar to this one from the Disney parks. (His is older and has a longer bill—we bought it in 2018.) I got him a pair of white athletic shorts and this costume tee from Amazon. And topped it off with yellow shoes to complete the look (we got these yellow sneakers from Amazon, but we also looked at yellow Native shoes or Crocs, which would also be great park shoes).

And as Mickey, my husband will be wearing red shorts, a black t-shirt, yellow shoes, and this Mickey-ear ball cap I found on Etsy (here’s another version on Amazon). I also scored a secondhand pair of costume Mickey gloves on Mercari, which won’t always happen but it’s definitely worth browsing if you’re looking for something specific to round out your costume!

Bonus Ideas
  • Incredibles Family: This one definitely works best for a family of three to five people. You can get red Incredibles costume t-shirts in all sizes on Amazon, pair with black jeans or shorts and you’re set! Or if you really want to complete the look, add black eye masks (here’s a 2-pack for only $7.99 on Amazon).
  • Huey, Dewey, and Louie from Duck Tales: This one is a total cinch to throw together! Everyone just needs white shorts and a t-shirt—either red, blue, or green! Yellow shoes and matching hats (find every color of ball cap on Amazon here!) would really tie it all together.
  • Toy Story Characters: You can find lots of costume t-shirts on Amazon, which makes this one easy and cheap to do. It feels too easy, but costume t-shirts are actually perfect for staying cool at MNSSHP. Start with Woody, Buzz, and Jessie and then keep adding from there depending on the size of your group!
